System State Backup

A System State Backup is a complex backup of your important system files.

A System State Backup is used to recover from lost or corrupted system files. It can also recover from a bad device driver installation.

System State Backup saves a set of files dictated by the operating system. We can't a-priori tell you how many or how long it will take. Typically a system state backup is for more than 100,000 files and will take hours. The backup is saved to your specified destination. We also save a descriptor metafile with the list of system files on the local computer, so you can do a full system restore. This metafile is also backed up to the destination (just in case).

We strongly recommend you create a destination just for system state backups. This is not necessary but it will make browsing for restore much simpler. The 100,000+ system files won't be in your normal backup destination(s) and if you need a system restore you don't have all of your documents to filter out.

Do not do a full system restore unless your system will not boot. A full system restore should work but it is almost never the right solution. Use your system state backup when mistakes are made and you need to recover a file.
